Pricing Engine
Rule-based pricing that evaluates cart conditions at checkout time. Pricing Engine does not guarantee higher revenue. Conflicting rules produce a review state — not automatic resolution. AI suggestions do not silently activate pricing changes.
The problem
Sellers apply promotions manually — through ad-hoc DMs or spreadsheet calculations — leading to inconsistent discount application, errors, and no audit trail of what was applied and when.
Who uses it
- ·Sellers with quantity-based promotions
- ·Merchants running time-limited discount campaigns
- ·Businesses needing consistent discount application across channels
- ·Sellers who want AI pricing suggestions with merchant approval before activation
What it does
Specific functions
"When / Then" rule creation
Condition: cart contents, quantity thresholds, product categories. Action: percentage or fixed discount.
Cart-time evaluation
Rules are evaluated when cart is reviewed before checkout — not at the catalogue level.
Simulation mode
Test a rule against sample carts before activation. Simulation does not affect live transactions.
Conflict detection
Overlapping rules produce a "Conflict — review needed" state. Not automatically resolved.
Rule lifecycle
Draft → Simulation → Review → Activation → Monitored outcome. Pause and expiry where supported.
Step-by-step scenario
Quantity discount — illustrative example
Illustrative example. All figures fictional.
1
Merchant creates a rule
When: cart contains ≥ 3 qualifying chairs. Then: apply 10% discount. Status: Draft.
2
Rule simulated
Merchant runs simulation with sample carts. Cart A (2 chairs): rule not eligible. Cart B (3 chairs): discount applies. Results match expectation.
3
Rule reviewed and activated
Merchant reviews simulation output and activates the rule. Status: Active.
4
Cart A (2 chairs) at checkout
Subtotal: ₦40,000. Rule condition not met (fewer than 3). No discount. Total: ₦40,000.
5
Cart B (3 chairs) at checkout
Subtotal: ₦60,000. Rule applies: −₦6,000 (10%). Total: ₦54,000.
6
Cart C (4 chairs) at checkout
Subtotal: ₦80,000. Rule applies: −₦8,000 (10%). Total: ₦72,000.
7
A conflicting promotion is added
A second rule targeting the same cart condition is added. Pricing Engine flags conflict. Both rules enter review state — neither applies until conflict is resolved by merchant.

Active
Rule evaluated at cart time. Applied when conditions are met.
Conflict — review needed
Overlapping rule detected. Automatic evaluation paused. Merchant must resolve.

How this differs from Opportunity Engine
Pricing Engine
- ✓Calculates discount terms at cart time
- ✓Works on all qualifying carts
- ✓Rule-based: if condition met, apply discount
- ✓Conflict detection, simulation and approval flow
Opportunity Engine
- –Identifies demand–supply matches
- –Works at intent + catalogue level
- –Match ≠ pricing calculation
- –Requires merchant review before outreach
Frequently asked questions
Can pricing rules conflict with each other?
Yes. When two or more rules apply to the same cart condition, Pricing Engine flags a conflict and pauses automatic evaluation. Both rules enter a review state. The merchant must resolve the conflict before either rule becomes active again.
Does AI change prices automatically?
No. AI may suggest pricing rules based on patterns, but those suggestions must be reviewed and explicitly activated by the merchant. No pricing change is applied silently.
What is the difference between Pricing Engine and Opportunity Engine?
Pricing Engine calculates the terms for a transaction — what discount applies to a specific cart. Opportunity Engine identifies actionable matches between buyer intent and available stock. A match from Opportunity Engine may eventually lead to a cart that Pricing Engine evaluates, but they are separate functions.
Does Pricing Engine guarantee higher revenue?
No. Pricing Engine applies the rules the merchant configures. Whether those rules result in higher revenue depends on buyer behaviour and market conditions — not the engine itself.
Can I test a rule without affecting live carts?
Yes. Simulation mode evaluates rules against sample data without any impact on live transactions.
